Emergency: 5 ways to raise the alarm

Personal locator beacon (PLB)

Release the antenna by pulling it upwards and then press the button to
‘activate’ the distress signal.

EPIRIB (Emergency position indicating beacon)

Remove the device from its cradle, extend the antenna, activate the switch,
uncoil the lanyard, attach it to the vessel, life-raft, or your lifejacket, and toss it
into the water once secure.

Very High Frequency (VHF) radio

Switch it to the distress channels (either 16 or 67) say ‘Mayday, mayday, mayday [insert vessel name]’

Pyrotechnic Flares (orange)

Unscrew the cap, extend your arm, point it away from you and others, keep it downwind to prevent spills, and don’t touch the hot end.

Activate your flares when you see a potential rescuer or when you believe they will be seen.

Phone

Call triple zero (000) if you are involved in or witness an emergency.
